Be enlightened in

Bordeaux

At the new Les Bassins de Lumières digital arts centre in Bordeaux, the largest of its kind in the world, experience the magic of 20th century masters – after-hours, in an historic and underground setting.

An Evening of Digital Artistry

A visit to Bordeaux during a France river cruise may immediately conjure images of indulging in exceptional wine, food and general French joie de vivre – but did you know that Bordeaux is also home to the largest digital arts centre in the world?

On an exclusive Scenic Enrich experience during Bordeaux river cruises, prepare for an exceptional evening of art and immersive and illusory interactions at Les Bassins de Lumières where you can delve deep into the works of 20th century masters Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Matisse, Signac, Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy and Chagall (and more) in an exhibition titled 'Journeys Around the Mediterranean', with each year the exhibition showcasing a new theme.

Arriving after-hours when closed to the general public at the new Les Bassins de Lumières (Basins of Enlightenment), which only opened in June 2020, Scenic guests will be greeted on arrival and treated to a glass of champagne. A well-versed local host will take you on an exclusive, crowd-free tour of this vivid and all-encompassing digital exhibition and its historic location – an experience that is inaccessible to regular travellers.

ABOVE and BELOW: Les Bassins de Lumières

The larger-than-life digital art gallery, the biggest of its kind in the world, is set deep inside the chambers of a former submarine base constructed during World War II. During 1940, Bordeaux was occupied by German troops as a strategic base, due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its port facilities. Work began in September 1941 on the construction of a submarine base here – the fifth on France’s Atlantic coast.

Over 19 months, 6,500 workers, mostly Spanish Republican prisoners, were involved in its construction. A 19-metre thick roof was designed to protect it from aerial attacks. The submarine base was completed in 1943, measuring 45,000 square metres wide and 235 metres in length.

It was eventually bombed by the Allied forces and extensively damaged. For many years, the site sat idle as a painful reminder of a turbulent time in French history and the Port de la Lune (port of the moon).

During the 1960s, the bunker started to attract artists, filmmakers and musicians and by 1999, the former submarine base was opened as a multi-disciplinary art site for various photographic exhibitions, musical performances and special events.

"This incredible fully immersive experience will take your breath away. At Scenic we pride ourselves on offering unique once in a lifetime experiences and with our exclusive After-hours access to Bassins de Lumières I am confident our guests will be impressed."

Les Bassins de Lumières runs across four of the chambers, 110 metres long and 22 metres wide. On the special Scenic Enrich experience, be mesmerised by a spectacular sensory light-and-sound display projecting the works of the Impressionist and Modernist masters onto the surfaces of 12-metre-high walls.

This immersive exhibition in Les Bassins de Lumières highlights the link between artistic creativity and the shores of the Mediterranean which was the principal centre of the Modernist movement.

Be transported back in time and soak up the cultural, artistic and historic ambience – but with a modern twist thanks to cutting-edge, digital technology – during this truly memorable and magical Scenic Enrich experience.
